about

Welcome to my new initiative, Ongoing Additions, a continuously evolving collection of recently composed and recorded works available here for free listening and downloading. I am also including some early pieces which are not available on any of my CDs

My general plan is to keep the list fairly free and open ended, adding new pieces from time to time and possibly dropping a few. So enjoy, and be sure to give me your feedback whenever you have ideas and opinions about the music! You may also listen to a variety of pieces directly from the home page of my website: www.tompkinsjazz.com, then comment, if you’d like, using the email contact link on the site.

lyrics

ANOTHER PLACE (2013): I do feel sometimes as if I’m in a different zone and time frame when I’m composing and often have to set my alarm if I have a dentist appointment (argh!) With this piece, I’m experimenting with multi-sectional composition, more simply meaning that I extend one section into another (with a general preconception of my overall form in mind) and do my best to keep it building in waves, reach a climax, and resolve it, in this case with a series of broadening sections toward the end. Again, Charlie Dent is a critical part of this process, building his drum part with each ebb and flow.
